Veganuary 2020

Veganuary is well and truly underway, with people inspired to try Vegan for the month of January. But what is veganism? And is it here to stay? – we think so!

What is veganism?

‘Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose’- The Vegan Society.

Veganism has been around since 1944, but it is still a relatively new concept to many people. It has rapidly grown in popularity and currently there are an estimated 600,000 vegans in the UK. Vegans have a plant-based diet avoiding all animal foods that contain food ingredients such as meat, dairy, eggs and honey, as well as avoiding animal derived materials, products tested on animals and places that use animals for entertainment. Vegan diets are rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, seeds, beans and pulses.

Switch to Vegan

The simple switches you must make to become a vegan are easier than ever before, as there are vegan versions of almost everything! In supermarkets you will find a range of plant-based milks such as oat, soya, almond, coconut, hemp, rice and more. Close to this you will also find plant-based cheeses and yoghurts. You can find burgers, sausages, faux fish fingers and other convenient products. There are even foods you buy already that are vegan such as various peanut butter, yeast extracts, jams, marmalades, baked beans, dried pasta, rice, almost all bread, vegetable stock cubes, lots of curry pastes and many more.

Vegan Inspiration

If you are interested in exploring different cuisines from around the world that are vegan friendly, you will discover countless delicious vegan meals. There is no single best cuisine for vegan food, but some parts of the world are a lot more vegan friendly than others. Cuisines such as Ethiopian, Indian, Japanese, Mexican, Thai and Middle Eastern. As a food manufacturer producing vegan products, we take great inspiration from these cuisines.
